Great is my suckitude: I may have killed my laptop :(((((
Posted from my iPhone:

I reached over to grab a fork and tipped over my glass of orange spritzer (OJ + seltzer). Right towards my laptop, which was on the table next to me. (It was a late, lowkey dinner -- just my husband and me; Meghan was already asleep for the night). Not a whole lot of it got on the laptop, but when I tried to use it 10 minutes or so later, it was dead. Now it's plugged in and the "sleep" light is flickering like crazy, as are the Caps Lock and Num Lock lights (and the fan keeps fading in and out). Not good! I can't get it to turn on -- all I get is the flickering lights. I'm hoping it'll improve as any little bits of OJ (which was the pulpy kind) dries; the flickering lights are better than no lights, which was what initially happened. But I have a bad feeling about this.... :(((((((((

The only silver lining is that I had backed up the computer a few weeks ago, when some sort of cache problem with Firefox had started making my OS go crazygonuts. The Genius Bar dude at the Apple Store fixed the problem (it took over 2 hours to get everything fixed up!), but I am now REALLY glad I had backed up, because this might just be the end. The other good thing is that I've wanted a MacBook Air for a while now (I currently have a 4-year-old PowerBook G4), so a new computer would be nice. But these are not the circumstances I wanted to buy one under.

:( *crosses fingers and waits*

Well, this'll make me to to bed early tonight. That's a good thing, I guess. I hate typing on the iPhone.

OMG, was this your subconscious way of attempting to get that computer after all?
Miss Sophia: Rufus - *sigh*miss_sophia on September 3rd, 2008 02:27 am (UTC)
I dunno, but it's now making me thankful for the whole mess of a few weeks ago, because had I not backed it up, I just might have been having a MAJOR nervous breakdown right now. It would have been BAD. But divka (see comment below) is giving me SOME hope right now.

I saw dikva's comment. It does sound promising. And if it works, I will definitely agree that Apple computers are built to last.

Ha! Well, I sure hope so. Now I'm using Jack's computer, since he fell asleep and the iPhone is a pain in the ass. It's going to be hard not to succumb to the urge of putting the battery in and checking to see if the computer works right after I deal with Meghan's inevitable wakeups rather than waiting until morning. I guess it helps that I'm usually dead tired when she wakes me up -- and that I'm so inept that I have a hard time getting the battery in without Jack's help (and that you also need a coin in order to do so, which is just...yeah, too much to think about at 3 am).

I spilled a 20 oz. diet coke on my laptop a year or two ago. I turned it over, drained everything out--and then I read that you should get the battery out of it. Then let it sit and dry.

I'm typing this on that laptop now--and there was no problems by the next day. Although it was doing the same flickering light thing yours was before I yanked the battery and let it sit overnight.
Miss Sophia: Gryffindor Braverymiss_sophia on September 3rd, 2008 02:33 am (UTC)
Oh dear god, you are giving me some hope!!! The juice didn't go anywhere near the battery, but all the same, I'm following your advice. The battery is now out, and the computer is unplugged. There wasn't nearly enough liquid to require draining -- I had only wiped the computer off, and that appeared to take care of the mess. I even tried turning it over, and there was nothing sloshing or coming out. There was far more OJ on the table...so maybe I'm in a good position for a full recovery??? Well, I'll let it sit overnight and see what happens.... Thanks for the beacon of hope!!!!

Yeah, I thought I was screwed at the time too. I was really impressed that my Mac pulled through. Good luck!

Oooh, yours is a Mac, too? *has even more hope now, yay!!!!* ... *reminds self to calm down; recovery is not a given*

Yup, a G4 powerbook--it was five years old at the time, and even older now. I can't kill the thing for trying.
Miss Sophia: Cho Rlymiss_sophia on September 3rd, 2008 02:56 am (UTC)
Wow, same kind, too, and old as well! I sure hope mine's as much of a trooper as yours is. Mine's been through quite a bit, including breakage of the power cord and breakage of the DC power port thingy (both due to my repeated tripping over the power cord >.< ) and the mysterious Firefox cache nightmare. If it survives this, I just might set up an altar to its indestructibility. Just out of curiosity, what else has yours been through?

Oh, I've been through two power cords malfunctions. And one of the hinges broke to the screen (which of course has the wires that power the screen in it)--which I managed to get fixed for a reasonable price rather than the obscene amount the Apple store want to charge me.

Poor ol' thing. I have a nice shiny Mac desktop too--but I love my old crappy laptop :)
Miss Sophia: Writing with Quillmiss_sophia on September 3rd, 2008 10:38 pm (UTC)
The power cords on the older models like we have are pretty crappy. One thing I'm really looking forward to when I finally bite the bullet and get a MacBook Air is the klutzproof cord.

We've got a desktop as well, but we haven't set up an office in our house since we moved in two years ago, so it's gathering dust in a box. :( Laptops are more convenient anyway.

glad you backed it up and the airs are so pretty

Miss Sophia: Srslymiss_sophia on September 3rd, 2008 02:37 am (UTC)
If I hadn't done the backup, I'd be in an ambulance, having a nervous breakdown, right now. And god, yes, the Airs are soooooo nice!!! You can get refurbished ones for a few hundred bucks cheaper, but with the same warranty, so I'll probably do that...but I hope it doesn't come to that!
jennso_severus on September 3rd, 2008 02:40 am (UTC)
ps - how exactly did you back everything up?

I am nervous now :x
well, ever since one of my external drives filled up
Miss Sophia: Gryffindor Braverymiss_sophia on September 3rd, 2008 02:48 am (UTC)
My husband bought this backup drive called a LaCie. I didn't actually do the backup -- he did -- but it looked pretty straightforward. It's probably a good idea to look into it; this one Mac expert guy (one of those people whom Apple refers you to if you want someone independent and local to fix your hardware) told me that eventually, hard drives die -- and this often happens suddenly. And if you have no backup at that time, you're basically screwed.
jennso_severus on September 3rd, 2008 03:04 am (UTC)
thanks for info
I will look more into it aka bother computer engineer bf
Miss Sophia: Meghan - Sweet potato smilemiss_sophia on September 3rd, 2008 03:10 am (UTC)
No prob! :) Hee, I've got the same thing going on here; my husband is the computer expert, so I just flail and ask him to fix things. I'm much better with software and applications than hardware.
alabastardalabastard on September 3rd, 2008 02:23 am (UTC)
Oh dear ... good thing you backed it up.

Of course, being Malfoy, it's a great excuse to get a new computer.

Miss Sophia: Ooh Dracomiss_sophia on September 3rd, 2008 02:40 am (UTC)
Oooh, am I a Malfoy now? :D
alabastardalabastard on September 3rd, 2008 08:51 am (UTC)
Well, pretty close, if you now play Bellatrix Black ;-)
Miss Sophia: House of Blackmiss_sophia on September 3rd, 2008 01:21 pm (UTC)
True, true! Thank goodness Hogwarts outfits are long sleeved so that I'll be able to hide my Dark Mark temporary tattoo when I go back into Hermione mode. I don't know how she'd be able to explain that one away otherwise!
alabastardalabastard on September 4th, 2008 02:22 am (UTC)
Oh, I think there are fics that might explain that one ;-0

Thanks!!! I'm hoping so, too! Oh, and I have to agree with spicedogs: That icon rocks! I just may have to snag as well. It's currently mesmerizing me.

Isn't that the worst feeling, watching liquid drip out of your computer? If it's any consolation, my laptop had a cup of tea upended onto the keyboard, and lived to tell the tale, eventually.
Miss Sophia: Srslymiss_sophia on September 3rd, 2008 01:23 pm (UTC)
The thing is, it didn't even drip, because not all that much got into it! But, of course, it's not like it was listening when I was trying to tell it that the OJ barely touched it. Luckily, like yours, it is alive and well once again, phew! (I think "eventually" just might be the key word when it comes to these sorts of incidents!)

Yay for indestructible electronics!!!
I am not a number; I am a free man!arxev on September 3rd, 2008 04:01 am (UTC)
Eek D: When that happened to me I had to get a new motherboard. Hope yours is okay!
Miss Sophia: Writing with Quillmiss_sophia on September 3rd, 2008 02:47 pm (UTC)
Aiya! Luckily, my computer has lived to tell the tale (although it looked for a while as if it wasn't going to). There's no way replacing a motherboard would have been worth it. Siri-hubby says that would have been $800 -- may as well buy a new computer at that rate.

Aw, the only liquid-related mishap to happen to me is spilling hot chocolate on my iPod...
Miss Sophia: Chinese Fireball Ooohmiss_sophia on September 3rd, 2008 08:22 pm (UTC)
Did it live to tell the tale?
The Fizzy Champagne Princesspuredeadthingy on September 4th, 2008 08:06 am (UTC)
Survey says: yes :D Though it does freeze more.
